Andrew Cameron CBE QPM BA. is the Chief Constable of Central Scotland Police. Mr Cameron was born in 1953 and, following service as a police cadet, joined the former Ayrshire Constabulary as a Constable in 1972, and thereafter Strathclyde Police following regionalisation.Mr Cameron has had a very broad range of experience during his career, having worked in the operational, research, administrative and command environments in both uniform and CID duties.From 1991 to 1994 he served as Staff Officer to Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary, based at the Scottish Office in Edinburgh. Here he carried out the normal inspection role in respect of the eight Scottish Forces and also conducted inspection work in Namibia, South West Africa, on behalf of the Overseas Development Administation.On his return to Strathclyde Police in 1994, he performed the role of Sub Divisional Officer in the Clydebank and Drumchapel areas formerly 'B' Division until 1995, when he led a project team in undertaking an extensive review of the Criminal Investigation Department. In September of that year he was appointed Deputy Divisional Commander of 'U' Division, and the following year Divisional Commander of the same Division.In October 1997, he was selected, along with the former Assistant Chief Constable John Welsh, to assist Western Australia Police in carrying out a review of investigative practices, training practices and the strategies used to tackle crime throughout Western Australia.Following a term as Personnel Officer for Strathclyde Police, Mr Cameron was appointed Assistant Chief Constable Management Services in April 1998. During this time, he was responsible for the restructuring of territorial police divisions. The restructuring of Force Headquarters departments also commenced at this time. On 1 April 1999 he was appointed Assistant Chief Constable Operations where the portfolio included strategic planning responsibilities for all major events impacting upon Strathclyde Police, such as the Tall Ships Race Greenock, August 1999, the England v Scotland Euro 2000 play off November 1999, and preparations to meet the challenges of the Millennium date change and celebrations.Mr Cameron was appointed Chief Constable of Central Scotland Police on 1 August 2000.Mr Cameron attended the University of Strathclyde as a police sponsored student, and in 1983 graduated with a BA in Business Administration. He was awarded the Queen's Police Medal in 2002 and was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire CBE in the New Year Honours list in 2007.
